Packaging
The water-soluble sachets are made from Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA). Which has been approved for use in pharmaceuticals, meaning a much safer alternative to plastic. The PVA polymer that Iron & Velvet use is fully water soluble so no physical risk to animals, it's completely non-toxic to the environment, aquatic life or animals and does not form micro-beads so again does not fit within the common usage of the term plastic.
The paper and cardboard packaging comes from Sustainably certified sources meaning this is also sustainably sourced.

Materials
PVA - Poly(vinyl acetate)
The Oxford English Dictionary defines plastic as "A synthetic material made from a wide range of organic polymers such as polyethylene, PVC, nylon, etc., that can be moulded into shape while soft, and then set into a rigid or slightly elastic form." PVA is a generic name for the type of polymer and can be many different structures and formulas, some are rigid or slightly elastic forms and would be classified as plastic as per the above but the structure Iron & Velvet produce is not rigid or slightly elastic, it's extremely elastic, soft and pliable so would not fit the description above.
In common usage the term plastic pollution is used in relation to the pollution that plastics create as they don't decompose quickly so cause physical harm to animals, when they do compose they form toxic compounds and in the very end they form micro-beads. The PVA polymer used in Iron & Velvet products is fully water soluble so no physical risk to animals, it's completely non-toxic to the environment, aquatic life or animals and does not form micro-beads so again does not fit within the common usage of the term plastic.
