Lokta paper is handmade using the bark of the Lokta shrub which is an ingenious plant to the Himalayas. The bark naturally sheds and grows back, the shrub does not need to be cut down or damaged in anyway to make this beautiful paper, the plant continues to grow meaning this is a very sustainable ad eco-friendly alternative to mass produced wrapping paper.
This paper is not only sustainable and natural, but also fair-trade and ethically made in Nepal by local artisans, supporting skilled craftsmen and women.
Our Lokta paper is an artisan wrapping paper which has not been cut, they have been naturally finished which saves unnecessary waste and shows the true natural and organic nature of this paper. I always fold the edges when wrapping but to give a more unique and rustique look you can leave the edges on show.
This handmade Lokta paper is completely plastic free. The paper itself can be recycled or put in your compost to biodegrade.

About Happy Wrap
Based in the Midlands, UK, Happywrap was created with the intention of reducing waste. Since the beginning Happywrap have been working hard to widen their ethical standards into a more holistic approach. Whether it’s workers’ rights, the environment or animal friendly Happywrap are proud of their ethical credentials:
Plastic-Free – I receive everything completely plastic free from Happwrap everything is sent using recycled or recyclable cardboard boxes.
Fair Trade – Happywrap Lokta wrapping paper is handmade in Nepal and certified by the World Fair Trade Foundation.
Made in Britain – Their recycled wrapping paper and gift tags and packaging materials are made in the UK. This reduces carbon footprint by buying locally and supports fair labour laws.
Animal-free, natural materials – Natural dyes have been used for the Lokta paper and vegetable based inks are used for printing the recycled wrapping paper. The lokta paper itself, is made using the sustainable bark from the lokta shrub. This shrub naturally sheds its bark every year and continues to grow, so harvesting the bark does not damage the plant.
Wendy the founder of Happywrap grew up in a busy farmhouse where the phrase “Never throw anything away” were said many a time by her uncle Uncle. There was always something in the sewing pile waiting to be repaired and numerous interesting objects kept until a use could be found for them. Looking back it seems inevitable that this love of beautiful materials coupled with the desire to make the best use of natures resources, led to the creation of Happywrap!
Eco-friendly Gift Wrapping
Did you know pretty much all wrapping paper you buy from the supermarkets and elsewhere is actually so bad for the environment? Not only are these wrapping papers made with synthetic dyes and chemicals, they normally contain plastic. Those shiny stars, glittery snowflakes and that metallic finish, are all made using materials that aren’t recyclable or biodegradable!
Tonnes and tonnes of used gift wrap is poured into the landfill every year, I’m talking huge amounts especially at Christmas! This same gift wrap won’t biodegrade, it can’t be reused or recycled so it will just end up sitting there for years to come, polluting our environment.
This is why it is important we make simple changes to how we present gifts so that they won’t be harming our environment or just ending up as unnecessary waste!
Whether you choose to use handmade Lokta paper, recycled paper, reusable cloth wrap, tissue paper or just simply twine with natural flowers, it makes the gift so much more special and meaningful, it is also far kinder on the environment.
