Wunder Workshop High-Grade Golden ThreadsÂ

Wonder Workshop are working directly with a smallholding farm and social enterprise in Herat, Afghanistan, to promote and create sustainable value chains for their exquisite, high-grade Golden Saffron.
This project is working in partnership with The Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI), which is a flagship programme of the International Trade Centre, a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization that is funded by the European Union.
Golden Saffron grown in Herat is proving a vital source of legitimate employment in the country by replacing the cultivation of lucrative but illegal opium poppies - in particular for women, who typically have fewer opportunities to earn an income in these rural areas.
The golden threads hold more than just an enchanting and powerful aromatic flavour, they also support women, their families and marginalised entrepreneurs who have been affected by years of conflict and instability.
"Red gold" as it is known, is also renowned to have many health benefits and is used traditionally as an aphrodisiac, recent studies have found it useful as an antioxidant and for weight loss.
Its holds an incredible aroma that is a wonderful addition to both sweet and savoury dishes. The vibrant yellow colour adds both depth and delight to simple rice dishes and in baking. A small pinch of saffron is enough to brighten and enliven any dish.
