Why You Should Switch to Eco Dental Floss 2

Why you should switch to an natural, vegan, organic, eco dental floss that is biodegradable and eco-friendly
Some reasons why you should consider switching and using an environmentally friendly, eco dental floss without delay!

Most of us don’t realise that conventional dental floss is made from Teflon (yes the stuff they coat pans with) or plastic and then coated in synthetic wax. Not only can these ingredients be toxic, but elements can be absorbed into our bloodstream when we floss and when we discard them, they are bad for the environment.

Environmental risk

You break off a bit of dental floss, wrap it around your fingers, and floss. Once finished, you discard it into the bin and don’t give it a moments thought. But what happens to that bit of white string when you throw it away? As it is so small, dental floss does not get recycled, nor is it biodegradable which means it ends up hanging around in the environment for centuries, if not millennia. These strands pose a significant danger for wildlife as not only are they made from harmful ingredients, but they can pose a risk of strangulation as well. If these strands become entangled on wildlife, or even swallowed they can cause serious injury and even death.

Health risk

A number of studies have found that dental floss and what it is coated in can have negative implications for your health. According to Harvard University, chemicals such as perfluorohexane sulfonic acid that are found in dental floss can find their way into our bloodstreams and have been linked to immune system issues, liver damage, and other nasty side effects. Furthermore, once they are in your body or the environment, it takes years for them to disappear.

A better option is to switch to an eco dental floss that is made from natural, organic, vegan, cruelty free ingredients and does not cause such a significant risk to wildlife or humans. There are plenty of natural, eco friendly alternatives out there that all just as effective for your dental health. You can choose from eco dental floss made from sustainable bamboo, eco dental floss made from natural silk, or eco dental floss made from natural cornstarch to name just a few.

At Peace With The Wild, we have selected some eco friendly brands of eco dental floss that we trust for being eco, vegan, cruelty free, organic, biodegradable, plastic free, and free from many of the chemical nasties that you find in commercial brands. This means that you can eco floss away to your heart’s content without worrying about the impact it might have on you, or the world around you.

  1. I’ve used georganics charcoal floss but was disappointed to read that it has polyester listed as one of the ingredients, which is, as far as I know, synthetic. Can you confirm that the products you offer are genuinely plastic free?

    1. Hi Hilary, Georganics Spearmint and Charcoal floss did used to contain some polyester but it is now 100% plastic free and biodegradable!
